Toddler Blog: Turtle Time!

6th February 2019

Today we had a totally awesome time learning all about turtles! First, we practiced our animal sign language and then we learnt all about how many sea turtles there are, what makes them special and what their favourite things to eat are. Next, we discovered all about the big adventures that baby turtles go on after they first hatch from their eggs! Mummy sea turtles lay lots of eggs and bury them in the sand to keep them nice and safe, but when baby turtles hatch out they must quickly crawl back to the sea. We all decorated our own baby turtles and took them out into the Aquarium to race them across the floor of our Atlantic Ocean exhibit! Our little turtles made it safely into the sea thanks to our wonderful huffing and puffing and fanning! When we got back to the café we had a close look at a real turtle shell and then sang our special Open Oceans song! We all had a fintastic time learning about turtles!

What makes sea turtles special?

  • There are seven species of sea turtles, these are the Leatherback, Green, Olive Ridley, Kemp Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead and Flatback. Sea turtles can be found in all oceans apart from the polar regions, it’s a little too chilly for them there!
  • Unlike us turtles are reptiles, like snakes and lizards! They are cold blooded, have scaly skin, breathe air and lay eggs. They can live for around 80 years, but scientists think that they could live to a whopping 150 years!
  • Here at the National Marine Aquarium we have a lovely turtle called Friday. Friday is a green turtle! When Friday was a baby he ate jellyfish, worms and insects but as he got older he should have become a vegetarian and not eaten any more fish! In the aquarium we feed Friday lettuce, cucumber, peppers, pumpkin and Brussel sprouts!

Next Week:  Is our final session of Toddler Tuesdays before February Half Term! We’ll be finishing our adventures on the open ocean by learning all about Plankton!

The sessions run from 10:30 to 11:30 every Tuesday morning during term time in our Waves café. We charge a ticket price of £1 per toddler (2-4 years old) with grownups and siblings under 2 able to come along for free. One grownup will always have to stay with the toddler throughout the session.

Anyone attending the sessions will also need to have paid for entry to the Aquarium beforehand. All of our tickets come with a year’s pass to the Aquarium so once you have paid entry the only charge for attending Toddler Tuesdays would be the ticket for the Toddler.
