Connecting Schools to our Ocean with NMA Learning

26th October 2018

Hello from the Learning Team at the National Marine Aquarium! The new term has gotten off to a flying start, with schools from Devon, Cornwall and even Somerset coming to the NMA for a complete range of different national curriculum linked sessions. This is the perfect time of year to join us, so below is everything you need to know about what we can offer you.

As a team, we tailor each session to the needs of the individual class, so it can be relevant to what the students are learning about at school. This means they’re always a little bit different, but here’s an idea of what we do:

Interactive Tours

Be guided around the UK’s largest aquarium by our highly experienced team and let your students be inspired by the incredible animals you will meet on your journey. From the rockpools of our own shores, to the Great Barrier Reef, your class will be able to see a world of habitats, spot adaptations of marine creatures and learn about the importance of having healthy seas. The themes are chosen by the class teachers, but our Learning Team will pack each tour full on challenges, activities and curriculum linked learning.

Bolster your day and reinforce learning through one of our workshops. Our favourites include Plastic Seas, Under the Knife and Habitat Hats, where students discover the plastic problem in our seas-and find out how to help, dissect a marine creature under careful supervision and create a memorable piece of artwork that students can take away.

Science Shows

Round your day off with one of our fun and interactive shows. Your students will be able to join in through science experiments, dressing up, cheering on their classmate and completing all the weird and wonderful challenges that our shows entail.

If you can’t make it to the NMA, then we have great news! Our outreach team would love to come and visit you at your school. And its gets better, because this isn’t just for those schools in the South West. We have outreach hubs in South Wales and the North East of England. So, if you are a teacher in these new locations, let us know and we can bring NMA workshops and science shows to your classroom.

You can stay in touch by following NMA Learning on Facebook and Twitter, where we’ll let you know all about our upcoming events, workshops and new opportunities for you to join us with here at the National Marine Aquarium.
