Here at the National Marine Aquarium, we’re gearing up for a Christmas to remember, with our exciting ‘Christmas Lights’ theme set to shine a spotlight on all things bioluminescent. Best of all, our lucky visitors will even get the chance to see Santa taking the plunge and Scuba-Diving in our popular Eddystone exhibit – not your usual Christmas grotto experience!

From Monday, 2nd December our Aquarium will be twinkling with lights from the Ocean and getting a fun festive makeover, and visitors will have the chance to take part in a special Christmas trail activity, as well as discovering what it really feels like to be thousands of metres below the Ocean’s surface by stepping inside our magical bioluminescence cave.

Children will be invited to write letters to Santa back at the North Pole and post their Christmas wish lists into a special mailbox, the contents of which will be delivered directly to Santa so that he knows just what to fill their stockings with this year.

Lottie Hawkins, our Public and Community Engagement Coordinator, says that a fun and festive Christmas was in store for all the Aquarium’s guests.

“With Christmas just around the corner, we’re really starting to get into the festive spirit, and our underwater world is getting a Christmas makeover! We’re excited to welcome our visitors into our Ocean winter wonderland, where they will have the chance to discover more about the bioluminescent creatures that live in the deep, as well as getting the chance to have a unique Santa experience as he dives daily into our Eddystone Reef Exhibit during our 2pm dive shows.”

The final of our family evening events for the year will also be held on Monday 23rd December, and this time, it’s one you won’t want to miss. ‘Christmas Night to Remember – The Elf Who Lost Santa’ will be a festive frenzy to get all who attend in the Christmas spirit ahead of the big day, with tickets priced £10.00 for adults and £18.00 for children aged 3-16 years. The event will include a special interactive play by Candlelight Theatre Company, a meet and greet with Santa, mulled wine and mince pies or arrival and a chance to see the underwater world after hours without the daytime crowds.

With our Aquarium decked out with beautiful festive decorations and of course, the customary Christmas tree, it’s a great time of year to discover our fascinating underwater world – as well as meeting our 5,000 amazing Ocean animals and finding out all about why the we, along with our parent charity, the Ocean Conservation Trust – want everyone to start to ‘Think Ocean’ in their daily lives.

Whilst you’re here, why not pop into our Ocean Gift Shop and browse for some unique Ocean friendly Christmas gifts? with a range of trinkets, toys, stationery and more to choose from, as well as a hugely popular range of eco-products that are perfect for hiding under the tree, there are lots of great finds to be had.
