As the cooler Autumn term approaches, we’re celebrating all things Ocean by looking back at a brilliant summer of Ocean Squad! We had 45 teenagers join us across three action-packed weeks throughout the summer holidays, where we explored the restricted areas of the Aquarium, discovering how our world-class team of biologists care for all 4000 of our animals. We also had a chance to snorkel in Plymouth Sound, learning how to use snorkelling equipment safely to explore our underwater world. Our exciting sessions also gave the groups to a chance to dive into a variety of Ocean conservation issues and create their own campaign video to raise awareness, covering topics from shark misconceptions, plastic in our Ocean and alternatives to plastic, with key things that people can do in their everyday lives to help with these issues.

From learning about sustainable seafood to sailing on Plymouth Sound, it was a week filled with fun for all of our budding marine biologists!

Our Ocean Squadders got to take part in a range of activities, including snorkelling and sailing around the Plymouth Sound by boat

Those who wanted the fun to continue also had the opportunity to join us for our exclusive Ocean Squad Lates, where teenagers were given the chance to get creative in our Ocean Graffiti evening, or create their own plastic-free beeswax wraps and learn about glass as a reusable alternative to plastic.

Here’s what some previous Ocean Squad participants had to say….

“It….. is…. the….. BEST!!!” – A 11 year old who took part

“The teenagers have had a brilliant, always coming home with a smile on their faces and looked forward to the next day. Thank you!!” – A parent of a participant

“Best thing in my life, 10/10” – a 14 year old who took part

Our teenagers had fun creating some Ocean-themed artwork

We are now eagerly planning next year’s sessions and looking forward to welcoming lots of enthusiastic young scientists to the National Marine Aquarium again in 2020, celebrating the Ocean in all of its glory.

If you would like to stay connected and hear more about our upcoming Ocean Squad events, then please email to be added to our mailing list.

Hope to see you at an Ocean Squad event soon!
