Our Mission: To inspire everyone to take action towards sustainability and conservation of the marine environment.
The National Marine Aquarium and the PMSP
Creating the National Marine Aquarium within Plymouth was a natural progression
for a city with a rich maritime history and a well-established focus on marine
science. When the Aquarium emerged, it joined forces with the four major
marine science organisations in the city – the Marine Biological Association of
the United Kingdom, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the Marine Institute of the
University of Plymouth and the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation of Ocean Science –
to work under the umbrella of the Plymouth Marine Sciences Partnership (PMSP).
Within the Plymouth Marine Sciences Partnership, the four major scientific
partners share resources and working practices while the National Marine
Aquarium specialises in engaging the public with the diverse range of marine
science researched by partnership scientists and the challenges facing the
oceans.
Increasingly, the Aquarium Science Team are collaborating with PMSP partner scientists to create science projects that can involve and be communicated with visitors and the wider public.
Additionally, PMSP scientists work with the Aquarium Learning team to advise on programmes for schools and they allow us to present a contemporary science perspective to pupils learning about science.
The partnership gives great strength to the city - Plymouth is now the base for the largest collection of marine scientists in the United Kingdom and has an international reputation for excellence in the marine sector.
