Fish and seafood are an important part of the diet for many millions of people in the world but as the population increases and as we get better at locating and catching fish, the pressure on many fish stocks is becoming unsustainable. Add into that the uncertainty of the effects of climate change upon ocean food chains and fish stocks and there is real reason for concern about the future of fisheries. Much of this concern arises from highly intensive and potentially destructive fishing methods that focus on a small number of species and the level of so-called ‘by-catch’ – killing and disposal of animals that are not the target species.

Consumer pressure can be a powerful weapon against excessive fishing pressure. The Good Fish Guide, published by the Marine Conservation Society, is a good starting point for those who wish to eat fish with a clear conscience and thankfully, a number of large retailers are now putting pressure on suppliers to fish using more sustainable methods. With continued focus and clear information to consumers it is possible that we can have our fish and eat them.
