Our science and learning teams are involved from time to time in projects which develop understanding of the marine environment and communicate marine issues. Find out about our latest projects.

Mineral Wealth Seabed Health

Mineral Wealth Seabed Health is a joint project between The National Marine Aquarium, The Marine Biological Association and Cefas.  The project, funded by the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund, aims to promote the public understanding of marine aggregate extraction and seabed organisms.

Mineral Wealth Seabed Health explores the environmental impact of dredging sand and gravel from the seabed.  Why is it necessary? How is it monitored? How can damage be minimised?

The first phase of the project involved the collation of information collected through seabed surveys related to aggregate extraction and the development of related interactive learning tools for both Aquarium visitor and schools.
A second phase of the project has extended into developing a Sustainability roadshow for local schools and teacher training days to demonstrate how aggregate extraction can be used as a relevant and engaging case study for sustainability issues.

EUR-OCEANS

EUR-OCEANS is an EC-funded “Network of Excellence” which brings together researchers from across the world to share experience, techniques and data gathered from their studies into the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.  As a part of the activity, a group of European aquariums including the National Marine Aquarium have formed a network to carry out outreach on behalf of the network of scientists.

The network of aquariums have produced a website, a number of short films, an educational programme and are also engaged in an ongoing programme of press activity to bring the work of the scientists to a broader public.

The results of this outreach activity can be viewed at:
