Our Learning team has developed a number of resources for use in your classroom that can be used to support a visit to the Aquarium or simply to introduce marine themes to your pupils. All resources are free to use and are linked to the National Curriculum.

Climate Lab - www.climatelab.co.ukChanging the climate in your classroom
This unique online resource to study climate change and the oceans was created as part of a European project, involving teachers and pupils in the process of creating the website. Information, links, resources, student projects and teachers notes help you to integrate the latest climate change science into your science, geography and citizenship schemes of work.
Mineral Wealth Seabed Health - www.mineral-wealth-seabedhealth.org
Sustainability, Environmental Impact, Decision Making
Created as part of a joint project between The National Marine Aquarium, The Marine Biological Association and Cefas, Mineral Wealth Seabed Health explores the environmental impact of dredging sand and gravel from the seabed. Why is it necessary? How is it monitored? How can damage be minimised? A decision making game for KS2-4 is supported by real data and in-depth species information.
Outreach - A deeper understanding
The National Marine Aquarium is a charity that is dedicated to raising awareness about our oceans. Whilst our attraction boasts the deepest tank in Britain, over 50 exhibits and thousands of animals it is not always possible to come to us for a visit.
Reef Raiders KS2
The former Royal Navy frigate HMS Scylla was sunk by the National Marine Aquarium in 2004, to ancreate an artificial reef.
This workshop explores what has happened on the reef since that time – What animals have colonised, what dictates the
patterns seen and what changes we might expect in the future.
Concepts covered: Habitats, Adaptations, Food chains, Environmental Messages,Survival, Pollution and Conservation
Price: £75 per session
Contact: Please call us on 01752 275 233 to discuss the options for your session.
The Truth Behind Finding Nemo KS
This 45 minute interactive presentation based upon the film (we recommend that the class watches the film before this session
although most children will have already seen it).
Pixar’s Finding Nemo is one of the all time best selling animated films. This fantastic fishy tale of two clownfish has been wonderfully told with many true to life details, but which bits are fact and which are fiction? We will delve into this underwater world and find out exactly what happens on the real coral reef and discover how Nemo’s dad should in fact be his mum!
Concepts covered: Habitats, Adaptations, Food chains, Environmental Messages, Symbiosis
Price: £75 per session
Contact: Please call us on 01752 275 233 to discuss the options for your session.
Aquatic Art KS2
This session is ideal as a follow up to a visit to the National Marine Aquarium or it could be used to kick-start a module of
work. Our experienced artist will come to your school and get the imaginations going to create some wonderful aquatic themed
art work with your class. Please call to discuss specific ideas with our artist.
Price: £200 for a full day, £100 for half a day
If it is a follow up to a visit - £75 for half a day, £150 for a full day
Contact: Please call us on 01752 275 233 to discuss the options for your session.
Reef Raiders KS3/4
The former Royal Navy frigate HMS Scylla was sunk by the National Marine Aquarium in 2004, to create an artificial reef. This
workshop explores what has happened on the reef since that time – What animals have colonised, what dictates the patterns
seen and what changes we might expect in the future.

Concepts covered: Habitats, Adaptations, Food chains, Environmental Sustainability, Survival, Pollution and Conservation
Price: £75 per session

Underwater Exploration KS3/4
Underwater technology is allowing man to interact with our oceans more and more. This session looks at the equipment used in
diving, the physics behind diving and what scientists can discover. We then venture into the deeper realms with ROV’s
(remotely operated vehicles). We look at their uses, the challenges in their design and see some of the footage collected by
our own ROV of the Scylla Reef. Finally we will look into the future and see where technology is hoping to take us.
Concepts covered: Gas Laws - Boyles law/Henry’s law/Charles Law, Pressure changes (atoms), Forces, Underwater Technology
Price: £75 per session
Contact: Please call us on 01752 275 233 to discuss the options for your session.
Design-a-tank KS3/4
This session hits the math’s curriculum for problem solving in KS 3 and 4. After a presentation about what types of tanks we
have here at the National Marine Aquarium the students are set the challenge of designing a tank for our new exhibit. Whether
it be for breeding, underwater remotely operated vehicles or simply a new shark tank. They must think carefully about viewing
windows and designs of structures within the tank. They will then estimate and calculate the volume of water needed to fill
the tank. For KS 4 using round concave or convex windows can cover geometrical reasoning in higher math’s sets.
Concepts covered: Problem solving, Volumes, Geometrical Reasoning, Formulas, 2-D and 3-D shapes
Price: £75 per session
Contact: Please call us on 01752 275 233 to discuss the options for your session.
Teacher Development
The oceans, covering 70% of our planet and harbouring over 90% of our biodiversity, are vital to all of us and we feel that
it is crucial for all pupils to have the opportunity to develop their natural interest in, and enthusiasm for, the marine
environment.
There are numerous opportunities to use examples from the marine environment in teaching right across subject areas and we aim to support teachers in delivering marine themes to support the National Curriculum.
A visit to the Aquarium is obviously a step in the right direction and our various online resources have been developed to provide further support.
We also organise teacher CPD days at the National Marine Aquarium with the aim of giving teachers the confidence and the resources to cover marine themes in the classroom.
Please contact us on 01752 275 233 for more details.
