INTERNATIONAL ARTIST WYLAND PAINTS HIS FIRST UK ‘WHALING’ WALL MURAL
Wyland, acclaimed marine life artist and conservation advocate has partnered with the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth to produce one of the last remaining murals in his internationally renowned Whaling Wall art project.

The artist will paint his 97th mural – 150 square meter underwater scene – on the side of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth throughout the week May 5-10, an event supported by the NMA, the R.S. Martin Charity for Education, Air Southwest, Plymouth City Council, University of Plymouth, Crown Paint, and HSS Hire.

The artist’s goal over the last twenty-five years has been to raise awareness about marine life conservation and global water issues through his Whaling Walls, a series of 100 murals — some as large as a hectare in size — in more than 70 cities throughout the world.

“This has been a fantastic journey,” the artist said. “When I started this project more than two decades ago, I never would have dreamed the project would be where it is today.”

Wyland is donating the painting as a gift to the community as part of a project to raise public awareness. Local students will be painting their own murals in the NMA courtyard, while Wyland completes his mural on the aquarium.

Plymouth was a natural choice for the artist to paint his only UK Whaling Wall mural, linking with the National Marine Aquarium’s mission to inspire everyone to enjoy, learn and care about our oceans through amazing memorable experiences. The NMA will be working with Wyland to adapt his curriculum for distribution to classrooms throughout the UK in the near future.

Wyland will begin creating the mural on Tuesday, 6 May, followed at the end of the week with a dedication ceremony at 5 PM Saturday, 10 May. BT Team Ellen and record-breaking yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur, who is also a Global Ambassador for BT’s Better World campaign, will be in attendance along with many other special invited guests.

Wyland completed his 96th mural this April in Pago Pago, American Samoa. Murals in Santos, Brazil, North Lauderdale, Florida, and Beijing, China will follow Whaling Wall 97 in Plymouth.

The completion of the 100th mural in July will mark the culmination of the largest on-going arts in public places project by a single individual. The artist’s work has garnered him a place in the Guinness Book for World Records, his own show on Discovery Channel’s “Animal Planet Network,” and a place on the front lines for preserving marine life throughout the world. He is the author of more than 18 books, including “Hold Your Water: 68 Things You Need to Know to Keep Our Planet Blue,” and his non-profit Wyland Foundation is actively involved in clean water education. He has also been recognised by the United Nations for his conservation efforts.

This event is being filmed and will serve as an integral part of a documentary series, highlighting the efforts of individuals and corporations working tirelessly around the world to further sustain our planet.
