World Ocean Day 2018!

7th June 2018

Did you know that every second breath you take has been generated by the Ocean? Or that the Ocean’s deepest point is 11 kilometres, far deeper than Mount Everest is tall? Or that 71% of the planet’s surface is covered by Ocean, containing 97% of the Earth’s water?

For a marine conservation charity dedicated to connecting us with our Oceans, World Ocean day is one our favourite days of the year! That means we’ve got plenty planned for this special day on the 8th of June 2018.

In our Host team…

Our hosts will be holding a series of beach cleans throughout the day to celebrate World Ocean day in the most Ocean-friendly way possible! Feel free to join in for a fun day out to the beach whilst doing your bit for conservation! Why not make it a day out with a spot of picnicking and rock-pooling too?

The beach clean times and locations are as follows:

 10 – 10:30

Mount Batten:

12:30 – 14:00

Teats Hill:

14:30 – 15:30

Firestone Bay:

16:00 – 18:00

In our Schools Team…

More people are talking about the Ocean than ever this year and we want to be part of starting an even bigger conversation in schools throughout the UK through World Ocean Day.

That’s why we’ve partnered with the Marine Biological Association (MBA), Marine Conservation Society (MCS), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and more to design a school toolkit that’s fun and curriculum linked, so that children learn more about the Ocean and their connection to it. Partnering with leading organisations means that we can share our love of the Ocean, rivers and estuaries to schools up and down the country.

There are three ways that our Schools team has been encouraging schools can to get involved with World Ocean Day:

  1. Host an assembly for the whole school or one class; a short film and informative slides with speaker notes provided.
  2. Dress up for the Ocean: from simply wearing something blue, to an Ocean creature, to a mermaid, or a rain cloud there are many ways to express our connection to the Ocean
  3. Ocean lesson: A wide selection of fun content and curriculum linked ides from leading marine educators to help get the Ocean into our learning.

Hundreds of schools have now registered to take part and have access to all the free teaching resources provided! It’s bound to be an educational and inspiring day for all those involved!

Last but not least, our staff will be having a change of wardrobe today! We’ll be wearing brand new uniforms. The best part is that they’re 100% cotton, and not made of any plastic or man-made material. For any questions and queries whilst at the Aquarium, look out for our host team, who will now be wearing a light blue colour.
