Hello, and welcome to Ocean Squad. My name is Joe and I will be running the sessions taking place just after the Easter holidays.
Ocean Squad is a brand new club for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15. We meet every week for 10 sessions, starting at the end of April and running until early July. They last for 2 hours every Saturday morning. I would love for everyone of this age to join us, so I thought I’d share a couple of the bits that we will be getting up to.
We’ll be starting off by exploring the restricted areas here at the National Marine Aquarium. Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes or how we look after and feed all the animals in our care? We’ll be going to the places only our Aquarium scientists are able to go.
The oceans are not all about science though- they can effect every single part of our lives. We’ll be tackling some of the problems they are facing by learning to cook our very own sustainable seafood meal, building a giant water wheel to generate electricity and designing sculptures made entirely out of rubbish.
To top off our Ocean Squad adventures, we will be joining with The Island Trust to spend a day sailing on a tall ship and The Zone for a snorkelling safari to discover the animals living in our very own waters. Nothing beats getting out there and having a great time.
Finally, with all this new found knowledge, we’ll be creating short videos and podcasts, to share with your friends, family and visitors to the National Marine Aquarium. You really will be doing your bit to help our seas.
So if you’ve ever thought about being a marine biologist when you’re older, taking part in new experiences or just really interested in the oceans (like me!) then this is what Ocean Squad is all about. It has been designed just for you, with that thought in mind. We are all super excited here at the National Marine Aquarium to get started. Hopefully we will see you there!
