Internship Programme

3rd December 2015

For several years the National Marine Aquarium husbandry team has been running an internship programme that allows people to gain valuable experience within the aquarium industry. Historically jobs within the marine sector are very hard to come by so the opportunity to spend 3 months with the UK’s largest aquarium can give you some unique experiences and a very important foot in the door.

We aim for our interns to work closely with our biologists so that good relationships are formed and the interns learn as much as possible. It is also great to have enthusiastic volunteers on site as we never know what skills they will bring with them, we learn from the interns as well!

As well as a great experience our internships have actually proved really useful for our volunteers and we have a long list of ex interns who now work within the marine sector. Quite a few have ended up working in other aquariums but there are also people employed in aquaculture, research and the aquarium hobby trade. Quite a few interns have also gained employment within the National Marine Aquarium’s husbandry team itself. In fact, historically approximately 90% of all husbandry staff have volunteered at the aquarium at some point!

It is important to realise that the internship programme is not there to replace paid staff, intern’s duties are not the same as paid staff and if needs be we can operate without a volunteer programme. Having interns does allow us to develop the aquarium in a way we might not normally be able to but ultimately it is about giving people a unique opportunity to gain the skills required to work in what is an exciting and fulfilling industry!

If you are at all interested in our internship programme more information can be found on the volunteer section of our web site.
