finding your way around the plymouth aquarium
The National Marine Aquarium was the first in the UK to be set up solely for the purposes of Education, Conservation and Research. As such we have been able to develop an innovative, in house learning programme. With a dedicated educational department made up of marine biologists, qualified teachers and a resident artist, the National Marine Aquarium has developed a reputation for excellence in informal education serving tens of thousands of school pupils each year.

School Groups
Our specialist team of education staff have produced a range of exciting interactive hands-on sessions, appropriate to the National Curriculum. It is also possible to tailor activities to meet individual group requirements. Choose from either an Independent Visit or a 2 or 3 hour In-Depth Visit for both Primary and Secondary Schools. Covering key areas from Science and Geography to Literacy and Numeracy.

Within our team we have a range of expertise including our resident artist, marine biologists, and qualified teachers. We are happy to discuss your session before hand to make sure it works for you.

Independent Visits
The aquarium offers an ideal environment for school groups to learn in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. If you choose not to have an in-depth guided tour by one of our learning team, then the needs of your group can still be catered for.

As an independent group you have the freedom to view the aquarium at a pace that your group requires but still be able to benefit from the help of our host team. From the moment you enter the building, one of our hosts will welcome your group with an introduction to the aquarium informing you of the talks and shows that are scheduled for your day of visit. You will also be directed on the best routes around the aquarium to ensure you don’t miss a thing.

Throughout the day there are various talks carried out by our hosts for your group to listen and watch, and games in Explorocean for everyone to get involved with. Our knowledgeable hosts can be found throughout the aquarium and will be more than happy to help to answer any questions that you may have. So whatever package you decide to opt for, your visit to the aquarium will surely be an exciting and educational day out for all.
