Hi, my name is Oleta and I run the Toddler Tuesday sessions at the National Marine Aquarium. In these sessions we discover the wonders of the marine world with fun and games.
Toddler Tuesday sessions are for children ages 2-4 and run during school term time from 10:30-11:30am. Tickets are £1 plus entry fee (please pay on arrival at the ticketing desk).
The running theme is ‘A to Z of the Seas’ each week we follow the alphabet to learn about the oceans and all its inhabitants. Sessions can include a variety of activities such as Rhyme Time, Songs, Story Time, arts and crafts, treasure hunts and trails, and on special occasions we may meet some Aquarium friends like Marina the Mermaid, Divers, Salty Sam the Fisherman or even a Pirate!
I started running the Toddler Tuesday sessions on the 27th September 2016, we explored the life of Anglerfish who live in the depths of the oceans, next week we moved onto Baleen Whales (like the Humpback Whale) with activities to learn how these huge animals take in gulps of water and filter out their food. For the letter C we explored how many animals are able to Camouflage themselves to hide from predators and prey, in this session we created our own Hiding Seahorse out of two paper plates, a push pin and some paint. This was a really fun activity as once it’s all dry you can spin the seahorse around and watch him change colour.
This week we learnt about the different Depths of the Ocean with a song similar to that sung in one of my favourite clownfish movies and had to figure out what animals could live at the different depths.
‘Lets name the zones, the zones, the zones. Let’s name the zones of the open sea. There’s Sunlight, Twilight, Midnight, Abyss. All the rest are too dark for you and me to see.’
Next Toddler Tuesday session will be on Tuesday 1st November starting at 10:30 in the Waves Café running for approximately 1 hour. In this session we will be on letter E for Eggs. Hope to see you there to help me explore what kind of animals have babies from eggs.
Explorers you’re going to have to join us on Tuesday mornings to find out what is next to discover!
